Random Stuff

It is a quarter after five in the morning and I have been up since 3:30. At first I thought I was just too tired to sleep. But now it just feels like insomnia and I simply can’t sleep. This has been happening frequently and I hope it stops soon.

I have been south visiting family and attending a “white coat” ceremony. My son is now officially a member of the 2015 class of the Harrison School of Pharmacy at Auburn University. There were about 150 first year students who received their white coats and they also took an oath pertaining to the field of Pharmacy. It was a new experience and a very proud one. We also got a tour of the Pharmacy School’s main building and the best way to describe it would be state of the art.

After that I had a wonderful week visiting with my 8-month old granddaughter. My daughter and I went to see Fright Night in 3-D. Colin Farrell made an excellent vampire. I haven’t been to a 3-D movie since I saw Friday The Thirteenth in 3-D way, way back when. The 3-D effects are completely improved and you don’t have to wear those cardboard glasses. We received individually wrapped glasses that look like a pair of sunglasses. After the movie you simply put them in a bin with a sign asking you to recycle the glasses. I know there are only so many ways you can keep telling a vampire story, but I felt this movie had a newer and refreshing approach.

My daughter also introduced me to a new trilogy written by Suzanne Collins. The first book is titled The Hunger Games. The books are actually found in the teen section of the bookstore. She told me I would get pulled into the story quickly and she was right. I finished The Hunger Games right before leaving for home. I hope to get the second book, Catching Fire in the next few days.

From Amazon.com about the first book, The Hunger Games:  Katniss is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, “The Hunger Games.” The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When Kat’s sister is chosen by lottery, Kat steps up to go in her place.

While on our way to the movie we saw a bumper sticker that I would like to find for myself. It read; Let’s hope Obama doesn’t know what comes after a Trillion. Ha.

Unfortunately the tornado damage in Huntsville and many places in north Alabama are still devastated.  Neighborhoods are being bull dozed and debris is still being moved everyday. The trees in a lot of areas look stripped and similar to old spooky trees you associate with ghost stories.

Huge very old trees are still waiting to be sawed and removed. I did notice many new roofs on homes as I approached my daughter’s neighborhood.  She and her family were so close, but thankfully they didn’t suffer much damage. Utility workers are still working on power supply and power related problems.

Going further south on the way to Auburn we saw the same scenes. I hope on my next visit home, things are looking better. Although we were nowhere near Tuscaloosa, my daughter has friends who tell her Tuscaloosa is still like a war zone.

Alabama football starts in 2 weeks with a home game against Kent State. I will be curious to see if any coverage will be shared about the many University students and athletes who have been working and helping that community for months and continues to do so.

The University of Alabama head football coach, Nick Saban, recently talked about how the press sticks to all things negative and has no interests in reporting the many positive stories of football players trying to make a difference in many ways.

I have caught a couple of the pre-season NFL football games. My Steelers pretty much handed The Philadelphia Eagles their butts on a platter. I have a renewed interest in the New Orleans Saints. Former Heisman trophy winner, Mark Ingram, has many Tide fans buying Saints jerseys with his name. I look forward to seeing him in action again. He is one that makes the game exciting.

I guess I will try to get to sleep. I hope you have a great week. Take care and stay safe,

KJ
