New SportsMAN for German Football Team

SportsMAN

This little MAN TGL LX tractor and trailer have just gone into service, selling footballing merchandise at home and away games for German football champions Borussia Dortmund. The MAN press release states; “The semitrailer tractor has been specially adapted by the Munich Dax-30 Group to the club’s requirements and designed in the club’s colors. Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga team has been traveling to its games in an exclusive MAN coach for around ten years. “

The press releasegoes on to say; Andreas Lampersbach, Head of MAN SE’s Corporate Communications, added: “Our partnership with Borussia Dortmund is going very well for us. Following the new Team Coach and the Champion Mobile, the Fan Shop on wheels is the third customized vehicle that our engineers have put on the road for BVB.”

Can anyone shed any light on the “Munich Dax-30 Group”?? I have heard of them before, they obviously do plenty of truck and vehicle conversions, but when I type it into Google, it just comes back with everything related to the German Stock Exchange! Any ideas, then email me; ben@truckblog.co.uk

Leo Tolstoy And Football

The title may seem as if Leo is going to play a few quarters this season. Nah, he is just on my mind as well as football.

I have been taking advantage of the beautiful weather here in the mid-west. Cleaning porches, windows, painting and gardening have been going on just about every day. That is my favorite kind of tired at the end of the day. The kind of tired you earned so to speak.

During this time I watched a really good movie. The Conspirator stars James McAvoy, Kevin Klein, Robin Wright and Tom Wilkinson. Robert Redford directed the movie, based on true events. The center of the film is Mary Surratt and her reluctant lawyer, Fredrick Aiken. James McAvoy plays Fredrick and he is fast becoming one of my favorite actors.  Mary, played by Robin Wright, was charged with conspiring with John Wilkes Booth and the other conspirators, including her son. She owned a boarding house were they would meet to make plans.

This movie is a thinking film. I found myself floundering on whether or not she was telling the truth that she had no idea of Booth’s plans. This film pointed out to me that even though I have read large amounts of material about Abraham Lincoln, I have never really looked into Booth and those who were tried for the same crimes. I have watched several documentaries about Booth, but I have not read anything about him or those like Mary Surratt. I plan to change that and seek out more information.

I knew Mary was the first women the U.S ever hanged, but I did not know about much more information surrounding her possible involvement. If you love history and these types of stories, I high recommend the film. I don’t understand why some films are “limited released”. This was one that was only shown in certain theaters in 2010.

This past Friday night our local high school had their first game of the season. One sure sign that fall in on the way is when I can hear the high school band practice. From my house I can hear them and their leader on his bull horn usually right before lunchtime. That sound oozes football and hopefully cooler temps.

College football is kicking in the coming weekend.  CBS Sports has Oklahoma in the first spot with Alabama in the second.  Then Oregon and LSU. There is heavy talk about LSU and how this may be their year. The 2010 National Champions, The Auburn Tigers, is ranked in and around the 25 spot on various polls. Coming off such a great season last year with the Championship and the Heisman Trophy winner, Cam Newton, the team has lost many veteran players.

Seeing Oklahoma on top of the rankings kind of caught me off guard. I must have taken a nap when something was going on with the Sooners. So I did some reading and I am still a little confused. Their running game was not very impressive last year and I don’t see where anything has been added to change that. They averaged 3.4 yards per carry. I am going to assume they spent considerable time working on that area.

Is there something I am missing here?  I tend to keep more watch on the SEC than other conferences until we get toward the end of the season, so I am scratching my head on OK in the number one spot. I think it may have more to do with the QB, Landry Jones. Some are even saying he will win the next Heisman as he is the best in the nation. Time and a few hard hits will tell.

They have an impressive returning sophomore, Brenna Clay, who will most likely lead in carries and make some excitement happen. So now my curiosity is way up there and I will make a point of watching some Oklahoma football this year. Former Sooner, Sam Bradford is now playing for the St. Louis Rams and they are happy to have him.

On an entirely different note, I read a book about Leo Tolstoy and his marriage. I have never really taken an interest in Leo Tolstoy until I saw the movie, The Last Station. After reading further about him and his wife, I am convinced these people would have greatly benefited from some modern Prozac usage! One thing that cracked me up was how Leo told his followers they should refrain from sex, even those married, yet his wife practically stayed pregnant. People followed him as if he was one of the apostles.

He was also a hardened male chauvinist. His opinion of women was about as low as you can go and not be a dictator in Iraq. He and his wife, Sophia, both kept journals that were more for tearing the other apart in words rather than for actual everyday life.

To be considered so smart he never seemed able to commit himself to anything other than the sound of his own voice or his words on paper. Even there he floundered some.   Leo certainly had a knack for setting the Russian leaders in a tailspin. I think that was enough for me. I really don’t have any further interests in Leo and his thoughts.  That is Leo in the first picture. He looks like the life of the party doesn’t he? I have heard he was a genius and far ahead of his time. Well, he is too far ahead for me, I just don’t get it.

One more day and we have September. Hope you are having a good week so far. Take care and be safe,

KJ

Football 2011: Free Agent Quarterbacks

It is almost my favorite time of year. Football and Fall is something I look forward to. College Football is just around the corner. More importantly, The University of Alabama’s first game this season is September 3 in Tuscaloosa against Kent State. Roll Tide Roll!

The football talk today is of course the agreements finally reached in the NFL. It has been 5 months and getting down to the wire before getting this settled. The lockout was lifted Monday and they predict this week to be a wild ride. One area that I wanted to touch on today is the free agent quarterbacks.

Peyton Manning is considered a done deal as resigning with the Indianapolis Colts. There has been some talk recently that the 4 time NFL MVP may be on the downward side of his career. All good things must come to an end, but I wouldn’t put Peyton too far on the downward scale just yet. Manning at 6ft.5 inches is 35 years old. His days at Tennessee are some I am still trying to block from my memory.

Matt Hasslebeck helped the Seattle Seahawks to a playoff run beating the New Orleans Saints with 4 touchdown passes. However, his season last year was not one of his best. He finished the year with 12 TDs and 17 pickoffs. The former player of Boston College is 35 years old.

Alex Smith of the San Francisco 49ers was at one time a number 1 overall pick. In the 2010 season he only played 11 games. In those eleven games he tossed 14 touchdowns. He is not the brightest shinning star out there, but his numbers have been on a steady climb. The 6ft.4inch Smith is 27 years old.

Billy Volek with the San Diego Chargers has been in the league for 12 years. The 35 year old is considered a great back-up guy. He didn’t play much last year as back up for Phillip Rivers.

Seneca Wallace did a great job covering for Matt Hassleback in 2008 while Hasslebeck was injured. He is now with the Cleveland Browns and is in the middle of Jake Delhomme and Colt McCoy. Not a good place to be.

The former Heisman Trophy winner, Troy Smith, had to fight for time with Alex Smith at the 49ers. He averaged 196 yards per game in six appearances. The 27 year old came to the NFL from Ohio State.

Marc Bulger is not doing so well. He at one time was a Pro Bowl quarterback. His career has not done him any favors in the area of asking price. In the past two seasons he has played 9 games. In those 9 games he threw 5 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. This 34 year-old Baltimore Raven played for West Virginia.

Luke McCown was a hit in 2007 when he threw more than 1,000 yards in 5 games for the Jaguars. Since then he has only been seen in 6 games. The is the eighth season for the 30 year who played for Louisiana Tech.

Da Bears Caleb Hanie is just a baby at 25 years old. He saw more play time in post season, where he went 13 for 20 in the NFC Championship game. He covered for Jay Cutler who was injured.

The Raiders Bruce Gradkowski spent more time on the sidelines with injuries than on the field. He threw 1,059 yards in 6 games in the 2010 season. If he sustains more injuries it most likely will affect his value.

Tarvaris Jackson who plays for the Vikings stepped in for 3 games to cover for the injured Brett Favre. Unfortunately for Tarvaris he fell short of helping the Vikings. 3 touchdowns and 4 interceptions weren’t pretty. Another problem was a turf toe injury. Ouch. *I just found out that Jackson has signed on with the Seattle Seahawks. This means Hasslebeck will be looking elsewhere.

Matt Leinart who wears a Texans uniform didn’t even take a snap last season. He hasn’t completed more than 60 passes since the beginning of his career in 2006 with the Cardinals. The main talk around Matt is he is not “battle tested”. Sports Illustrated quips he should at least be well rested.

There is a lot to talk about in football. I downloaded the summary of the official agreements that finally lifted the lockout. I will see if there are any good highlights after I give it a look. I just read that Heisman Trophy winner, Mark Ingram, of the University of Alabama, may see limited carries with his new team the Saints. I will be looking into that. Us Bama fans are eager to see him succeed in the NFL along with Julio Jones.

There are also some interesting running backs that are now free agents that are worth looking at. And as always lots of things to talk about in college football.

So we will get ready for the 2011 season together. I am ready for some football!

Take care and stay safe,
