Eaton Buys Chilean Parts Manufacturer

Eaton Corp. has acquired Chilean heavy industry parts manufacturer Rolec Comercial e Industrial, the component supplier said.

Eaton said the purchase will boost the company’s growth in Chile and Peru especially in mining, pulp and paper and energy infrastructure. Terms were not disclosed.

Eaton recently received approval for its $11.8 billion acquisition of Ireland-based Cooper Industries from two international bodies, satisfying conditions of the planned acquisition.

The Cooper deal still needs to be approved by Eaton and Cooper shareholders, which have shareholder meetings scheduled for Oct. 26, Eaton said.

Eaton, DOE Fund Project to Develop Smaller Batteries for Hybrids

Components maker Eaton Corp. said it is developing a power control system to reduce battery size, with a focus on hybrids including both passenger cars and commercial vehicles.

The $2.5 million project is being funded jointly by Eaton and a Department of Energy grant, Eaton said in a statement.

The project’s goal is to reduce battery size by 50% while improving overall performance, Eaton said.

Eaton UltraShift Plus now available with Westport's 15L LNG engine

GALESBURG, Mich. -- Eaton has announced its UltraShift Plus automated transmission is now available in trucks spec’d with the Westport HD 15-litre liquefied natural gas (LNG) engine.

The transmission and engine combo can be spec’d on Kenworth T800 and Peterbilt 367, 386 and 387 model vehicles.

“Our newest generation of automated transmissions perfectly complement the Westport engines and are an ideal, environmentally friendly option for a variety of heavy-duty trucking applications because they engage early and do not waste energy,” said Shane Groner, manager, development and product planning North America for Eaton’s commercial vehicle transmissions.

The engines and transmissions are rated at more than 110,000 lbs GVW.

“The Eaton UltraShift Plus provides Westport customers with a wider range of transmission options in a solution that’s integrated for product and service,” said Clark Quintin, president, Westport HD. “The UltraShift has been engineered and qualified to meet our high standards, and to perform in the Westport HD 15L HPDI engine with excellent performance under the rigors of heavy-duty trucking fueled by liquid natural gas.”

Eaton UltraShift Plus now available in Western Star trucks

FORT MILL, S.C. -- The Eaton UltraShift Plus automated transmission is now available for all Detroit Diesel DD13-equipped Western Star 4900 day-cab configuration truck models. The transmission will also be available for DD13 and Cummins ISL-equipped Western Star 4700 trucks in January.

"The Eaton UltraShift PLUS not only increases efficiency and performance, but also allows our customers the ability to tailor their transmission to meet the unique needs of any on-highway or vocational application," said Ann Demitruk, director of marketing, Western Star.

The UltraShift Plus is available in six transmission models and designed for both on-highway and vocational applications.

Eaton Posts Record 3Q Earnings Per Share

Truck and auto components maker Eaton Corp. said Monday it posted record third-quarter earnings per share, up 37% from last year.

Eaton’s net income rose to $365 million, or $1.07 per share, up from $268 million, or 78 cents, a year ago. Sales rose 15% to $4.12 billion.

“We anticipate net income per share for the fourth quarter of 2011 to be between $1.04 and $1.14,” Eaton CEO Alexander Cutler said in a statement.

Eaton’s truck segment reported an operating profit of $139 million, as sales rose 34% to a quarterly record $715 million.

Truck production rose 25%, with U.S. markets up 51% and non-U.S. markets up 7% in the quarter, the company said in a statement.

“We now expect the [North American Free Trade Agreement] Class 8 market to total 255,000 units, a small reduction from our forecast in July,” Cutler said in a statement. “Outside NAFTA, we are seeing a continuation of modest growth.”
