NAFTA Surface Trade Rises 6.6% in June

Surface trade among the United States, Canada and Mexico rose 6.6% in June from a year ago, the Department of Transportation said Tuesday.

Trade among the North American Free Trade Agreement partners rose to $82.6 billion, DOT’s Bureau of Trade Statistics said in its monthly report.

Month-to-month trade, which is affected by seasonal factors, dropped 1.4% from May.

U.S.-Canada trade rose 5% to $48.4 billion, while U.S.-Mexico trade jumped 8.8% to $34.2 billion.

Truck imports to the United States from the two countries rose 5.7% year-over-year to $27.7 billion. Exports rose 7.6% to $29.9 billion.

Rail imports rose 16.4% to $9.4 billion and exports gained 17.2% to $5.3 billion. Pipeline imports fell 12.5% to $5.5 billion, while exports plunged 33.7% to $675 million.

North American surface trade climbs 8.3% year-over-year in May

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Trade using surface transportation between Canada, the US and Mexico, was 8.3% higher in May than in May 2011, totalling $83.8 billion (not adjusted for inflation), according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the US Department of Transportation. Adjusted for inflation and exchange rates, the May total was $60.7 billion in 2004 dollars, up 11.7% from May 2011. 

BTS reported that the May value of US surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico rose 13.0% from May 2008, six months into the recession, and 75.0% from May 2009, late in the recession.

The value of US surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico in May increased by 72.6% compared to May 2002. Imports in May were up 62.5% since May 2002, while exports were up 85.9%.

In May, 86.5% of US trade by value with Canada and Mexico moved via land, 9.6% moved by vessel, and 3.8% moved by air.

The value of US surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico increased 5.0% in May from April.

US-Canada surface transportation trade in May increased compared to May 2011, reaching $48.1 billion, a 4.0% increase.

In May, Michigan led all states in surface trade with Canada, at $6.5 billion, a 2.6% increase from May 2011. Of the top 10 states by value, California had the largest percentage increase over May 2011, at 29.7%.

The top commodity category transported between the US and Canada by surface modes of transportation in May was vehicles, valued at $9.5 billion.

Month-to-month trade, which is affected by seasonal factors, rose 5% from April. The previous month, March, had been a record, with the trade level topping $85 billion for the first time.

U.S.-Canada trade rose 4% to $48.1 billion, while U.S.-Mexico trade jumped 14.9% to $35.6 billion.

Truck imports to the United States from the two countries rose 12.3% year-over-year to $29.4 billion. Exports rose 11.6% to $30.5 billion.

N.A. surface transportation soars 13.8% in September

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Trade using surface transportation between Canada, the US and Mexico was 13.8% higher in September than in September 2010, totalling $77.7 billion, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the US Department of Transportation.

BTS reported that the value of US surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico in September rose 35.7% in two years from September 2009 and 83.0% when compared to September 2001.

Imports in September were up 71.3% since September 2001, while exports were up 99.0%.

In September, 85.6% of US trade by value with Canada and Mexico moved via land, 9.8% moved by vessel, and 4.5% moved by air.

The value of US surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico decreased 3.3% in September from August.

US-Canada surface transportation trade increased compared to September 2010 reaching $46.1 billion, a 14.7% increase.

In September trade by state, Michigan led all states in surface trade with Canada as it has in previous years, at $6.0 billion, a 9.6% increase from September 2010.

N.A. surface trade passes $80 billion in August

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Trade using surface transportation between Canada, the US, and Mexico was 18.3% higher in August than in August 2010, totalling $80.4 billion, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the US Department of Transportation. This was the second time on record that US-NAFTA trade by land modes exceeded $80 billion in one month - the first time was in March.

BTS reported that the value of US surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico rose 48.2% in August since August 2009 and 11.3% since August 2008.

The value of US surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico in August increased by 21.2% when compared to August 2006, and also increased by 70.6% when compared to August 2001. Imports in August were up 59.7% since August 2001, while exports were up 84.8%.

The value of US surface transportation trade with Canada and Mexico increased 11.1% in August from July.

US-Canada surface transportation trade increased compared to August 2010 with reaching $47.5 billion, a 19.1% increase.

In August trade by state, Michigan led all states in surface trade with Canada as it has in previous years, at $6.4 billion, a 19.3% increase from August 2010.
