Eurotunnel Profit Soars; Truck Traffic Sets Record

Groupe Eurotunnel more than tripled its profit in 2012 as it transported a record number of trucks through its subsea rail link between the U.K. and France.

Net income grew to 34 million euros ($43.9 million) from 11 million euros ($14.2 million) in 2011 as revenue jumped 16 percent to 1 billion euros ($1.29 billion) as the London Olympics boosted passenger numbers to almost 20 million.

The Anglo French group earned $595 million before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization, an increase of 10 percent on the previous year.

The number of trucks transported on shuttle trains increased 16 percent to 1.46 million, boosting the tunnel’s U.K.-France market share by 5 percentage points to a record 43.5 percent.

The truck market, which is also served by ferries, grew an estimated 2.5 percent in 2012, but remains about 10 percent below the pre-recession peak in 2007.

The number of freight trains traveling through the 30-mile-long tunnel declined 3 percent, and tonnage was 7 percent lower at 1.23 million tons, reflecting the decision of SNCF, France’s state-owned railway, to cease its cross-channel wagon load business.

Europorte, the group’s rail freight unit, boosted its revenue, however, by 28 percent, to $270 million and made a modest $3.9 million profit compared with a year-earlier loss of $1 million.

Eurotunnel is awaiting a final ruling from U.K. regulators, due in mid-April, on its $84 million acquisition of three ships owned by SNCF’s bankrupt shipping unit Sea France, which it is now deploying in a new shipping line, MyFerryLink.

In an interim ruling, U.K. regulators said Eurotunnel’s entry into the shipping market would push up freight and passenger fares, particularly if the extra capacity forced another ferry line to quit the cross-channel route.

This has put U.K. regulators on a collision course with their French counterparts who approved the acquisition on condition that Eurotunnel does not cross-market cargo services on rail and ships for five years.

Intermodal Traffic Gains 3.8% for Week

Tom Biery/Trans Pixs

U.S. intermodal traffic rose 3.8% last week over the same week a year ago, the Association of American Railroads reported.

Container traffic for the week ended Saturday rose 6.2% to 220,740 units, while trailers fell 11.1% to 30,379 units.

Railroad carloads — excluding intermodal — fell 6.3% to 283,440 units for the week, AAR said in its weekly report.

Railroad volume is considered an important economic indicator. Intermodal traffic, which tends to be higher-valued merchandise than bulk commodities, uses trains for the longhaul and trucks for the shorter distance at either end of the trip.

Construction Closes Several Lanes of Traffic on Bridge Linking Indiana and Louisville, Ky.

Construction on the Interstate 65 John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge connecting southern Indiana and Louisville, Ky., has shut down several traffic lanes in each direction.

The Ohio River crossing supports nearly 136,000 vehicles per day, with an estimated 17,500 of them commercial trucks. The bridge, which has four northbound lanes but only three southbound lanes, will be reduced to two lanes in both directions through at least the end of July, said Andrea Clifford, a spokeswoman with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

Repairs to the bridge will include a new deck surface, expansion joint replacements, concrete patches and waterproof asphalt driving surface.

“For many months, we have fielded complaints about the rough, pitted surface of the Kennedy Bridge,” Matt Bullock, the engineer assigned to the project, said in a statement. “These repairs were originally scheduled for this past spring, but the emergency closure of the I-64 Sherman Minton Bridge forced us to reschedule.”

Owner/operator protest slows freight traffic at Vaughan CP terminal

VAUGHAN, Ont. -- A contract dispute between a group of owner/operators and CP Rail has lead to a protest at CP’s intermodal terminal in Vaughan.

About 80 O/Os who move CP’s railcars by truck for General Cartage, Canada Drayage and Sim-Tran parked their vehicles, and blocked the main entrance on Rutherford Rd. near Highway 427 early Monday, according to a report from the Toronto Star.

The protest centres on the drivers’ new three-year contract, introduced July 9, that changes how they are paid, effectively cutting their wages by about 30%, according to the Star.

A driver at the protest said the cut comes after a previous 30% cut introduced in 2009.

The protestors have vowed to keep up their picket line around the clock, according to the report.

On a normal day, the terminal handles up to 1,900 trucks, according to a CP official.

Intermodal Traffic Sets June Record

Tom Biery/Trans Pixs

U.S. intermodal traffic rose 5.2% in June from a year ago and was the highest weekly average for the month of June on record, the Association of American Railroads said.

Volume rose to 996,022 units, and June’s average weekly volume of 249,006 units was the third highest for any month on record, trailing only August and October of 2006, the rail trade group said.

“Intermodal originations in 2012 through June are slightly ahead of 2006’s record pace, setting up the very real possibility that 2012 will be the highest-volume intermodal year ever for U.S. railroads,” AAR Senior Vice President John Gray said in a statement.

Intermodal activity for the week ended June 30 rose 7%, led by 9.2% jump in container traffic to 222,410 units, offsetting a 6.8% drop in trailer traffic to 31,087 units.
