Marcos Ambrose Gets His First Win At The Glen

The Tasmanian Devil has finally won a race in the Sprint Cup, Marcos Ambrose has taken the number nine to victory lane for Richard Petty in a rain delayed “Heluva Good Dips and Spreads at the glen”. I think I may change my view about road course racing after seeing the videos of this race’s highlights. I had to work today so I had to listen to it on the satellite radio, but I watched the highlights on the Internet while sitting in a dock this evening. Before I get into the wrecks and the “Almost Fist Fight” let me say this about Watkins Glen, compared to Sonoma this road course is way cooler than any others we have ever gone to. Jeffro in his comments on my pre race post said that he thought that there should be one in the chase. I totally agree with him as long as it is Watkins Glen and is in the front four races of the chase. I really don’t want to see another road course in the season other than this one. Sonoma is too short, I don’t like it, these stock cars can get some really good speed up at Watkins Glen, which is really the opposite of Sonoma’s Infinion Raceway. Removing the gravel traps and using the double file restarts was a thing of genius in my opinion.

There seemed to be a theme in the inner loop a.k.a. the bus stop, Spin outs were in fashion in that turn today. Followed by a little lawn mowing which didn’t help anybody as the splitter on these cars is so low that when you get in the grass you sort of mow the lawn with the thing and a good amount of that grass goes right up on the intake screen in the grill. It doesn’t take much of this to cause your car to overheat as we saw in many instances in Saturday’s Nationwide race. As I watch the highlights video again and again I am amazed at how hard you can take a hit in these new cars and not get hurt. Kurt Busch blew that tire and you saw him get jolted by the force of the tire explosion first, then he crams it into the tire barrier at nearly full song. His head nearly hit the steering wheel he hit so hard. Then we get Denny Hamlin’s wreck, I don’t know how he isn’t hurt from that head on with the tire barrier. Hell it wasn’t just the tire barrier he pushed through and hit that concrete stanchion that the catch fence was mounted to. That car folded up right to the windshield.

Man, you blow a tire on this track and you had better just wait for the hook to show up because when Paul Menard blew that tire and hit the wall he torn the hell out of his car driving it down the track. Some people think that they need Safer Barriers there at Watkins Glen, maybe they do but they only carry enough speed to need them in a few places and those are mostly straight away areas. But then I watched David Reutimann go cart wheeling into the outside wall in turn number two. If he had been driving one of the old cars he wouldn’t have been climbing out under his own power. Reutimann and Denny Hamlin were vocal about the safety of the guardrail at this facility after the race and I can’t blame then for feeling that way.

Man was Boris Said mad as hell at Greg Biffle after the race. Said threatened to whip Biffle’s butt and didn’t care who knew about it. Biffle ran out of gas and was running two laps down when he and Said exchanges pleasantries on the track. Boris made it clear in no uncertain terms what he thought of the deal.

He’s the most unprofessional little scaredy cat I’ve ever seen in my life,” Said fumed. “He wouldn’t even fight me like a man after. So, if someone texts me his address, I’ll go see him Wednesday at his house and show him what he really needs. He needs a whipping, and I’m going to give it to him. He was flipping me off, giving me the finger. Totally unprofessional, two laps down — I mean he is a chump.

“I went over there to go talk to him. He wouldn’t even let me get out of the car. He comes over and throws a few little baby punches, and then when I get out, he runs away and hides behind some big guys. But he won’t hide from me long. I’ll find him. I won’t settle it out on the track. It’s not right to wreck cars, but he’ll show up at a race with a black eye one of these days. I’ll see him somewhere.”

I wonder if he has cooled off or did someone text him Biffle’s address? Do you think he could take Biffle? I guess we will have to wait to see if there were any sheriff’s cars called out to the Biffle home tonight.

Congratulations to Marco Ambrose for his first win, I know I didn’t talk too much about him, its just that there was so much else to talk about. Exciting road course racing, Who’d a thunk it?
