New Redbox Releases

Some Redbox movie updates are calling me. The movie Red Riding Hood is now out and available for rental. This is one of those movies that I want to see, but I am going to try and not go in with high expectations and such. The concept is one I like. In fact, I have heard they are also working on a modern Snow White. Kristen Stewart of the Twilight fame is slated to play Snow White the last I heard.

Anyway,  Twilight director, Catherine Hardwicke takes  this classic children’s story and puts it on a new path. Which by the way, when you really stop and think about it, that is a pretty gruesome tale. Some folks are trying to burn Harry Potter books, but if you stop and look at some of our classic stories for kids…..they are rough around the edges. Little girl going to see grandma…..grandma has been eaten by a wolf and trust me this wolf doesn’t look anything like Benicio Del Toro in the latest Wolfman, because for me that would make a difference.  The wolf is waiting in grandma’s bed, trying to lure Red Riding Hood closer so he can also have her for a snack. Not exactly rainbows and daisies, is it?

Amanda Seyfried, who has been in several notable movies, Jennifer’s Body, Letters To Juliette, Mama Mia and Chole, plays Red Riding Hood. The setting is a medieval village, which we can only hope does not resemble anything like The Village brought to us by M. Knight Shyamalan. Sorry, I digress.

Red Riding Hood, whose name in the movie is Valerie, is torn between two men. One is a “brooding” outsider and the other is an arranged marriage. She plans to run away with the brooding fellow, when her sister is found killed by a werewolf. They are not surprised that there is a werewolf prowling around their village, as they have had a sort of truce with the beast for years. They even offered up an animal sacrifice once a month to show good faith.

But, the werewolf’s nature can only be contained for so long. This movie even has a werewolf hunter! Gary Oldman plays Father Solomon. Father reminds the villagers that the wolf takes human form by day, so anyone in the village could be the monster. This movie is rated PG-13.

If you are still in the mood for something dark and likely to make you a little jumpy, Insidious is also out and available. This movie was given a 7 out of 10 stars at the IMdB website.  A young family makes the terrifying discovery that the body of their comatose son has become a conduit for the supernatural, while his consciousness is held hostage in the dark and insidious realm known as The Further. This is another one I want to see, but once again I will try to not have too high expectations. This movie is rated PG-13. The cast is not really full of well-known actors.

Here are some other quick titles available for rental:

The comedy Hall Pass with Owen Wilson.

Big Mama’s House: Like Father Like Son with Martin Lawrence.

The suspenseful movie, The Lincoln Lawyer with Mathew McCongaughey.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, Part 1. It will not be long and the last movie of this entire series will be released. What a wild ride for J. K. Rowling.

Battle: Los Angeles. This is one of the latest aliens attack movies. This is on a large scale and seems to be a movie to grab if you are in the mood for big explosions, lots of big guns and Marines kicking some alien butt.

Well that is just a few new releases. They should all be available at your nearest Redbox.

Take care and stay safe,

KJ
