Today a total of 24 states have been issued heat warnings. This kind of heat makes me ill. In the dead of winter my joints are bad, but I feel better in the winter than I do in the summer. I had to run to the store and my Jeep read 97 in the garage. I don’t even want to know the heat index. But it has taken some starch out of me. I do recommend trips to Dairy Queen. It has been proven to ease some of the pain.
What is it with fans and catching home runs at the risk of injury or death? Just recently a man tragically died leaning over to catch a ball and fell to his death. I read that his young son was with him and saw the accident. Now another fellow was on the similar path, but his friends were able to save him. This fellow was at the home run derby in Phoenix. Not only are people risking themselves for these balls, one fan is being punished so to speak for returning Derek Jeter’s 3000 hit. The Yankees gave Christian Lopez “gifts” for his kindness in returning the ball to Jeter. Among the gifts were luxury suite tickets for remaining Yankee home games, three bats, three balls and two jerseys all signed by Jeter. Uncle Sam is knocking at his door letting him know that he will have to pay the taxes on the items which could total as much as $14,000. The amount of money he could have made off selling the ball is too high to guess. He did what he thought was right………
On the same note, I do think it is awesome that Jeter got his 3000 hit.
I read today that it is highly likely Casey Anthony will have to change her name and try to start life as another person. She has received numerous death threats. Regardless of the outcome of the trial and verdict, I thought we lived in a country where we stand with decisions made by a selected jury. Twelve people spent weeks taking in all the information and found her not guilty. We will never know what really happened to Caylee Anthony. There were so many bizarre things around this case, the people involved, and evidence. I am thinking we will see tell all books on bookshelves soon, and the Lifetime network I am sure has a movie up and shooting already. I think the situation is a lose-lose. That family is broken in more ways than one.
Long haul truckers in Tennessee are pitching in to help with a missing woman, Holly BoBo. Holly, a nursing student has been missing 3 months. Decals with Holly’s picture and information are being placed on the back of trucks. Steve Hinson’s company, Amerawear Co. is printing and selling the decals at cost. Friends and family are praying many truckers will help out. The large decals are $25.50 and smaller ones are $5.50
Here is a headline you don’t see everyday: “Man’s Eyeball Pecked Out By Sea Bird.” A man in Gower Wales went to help a sea bird that appeared to be injured. When he picked the bird up, a dog ran by and startled the bird. He then did three rapid pecks in the man’s eyes. Both eyes were injured but his right eye was hanging out, literally. I don’t think I can add anything more to that story.
The actors of the 70s hit TV show Happy Days is suing CBS for failure to pay merchandizing revenues. They want to collect money from items sold that had the actor’s names and images on merchandise. Marion Ross, Don Most, Anson Williams, Erin Moran and the widow of Tom Bosley are the actors in the suit. The suit is for $10 million in damages. It appears CBS is not abiding by the contracts in place for the show’s actors. Wowza! $10 million! That is a lot of merchandise. The show ran from 1974 until 1984 and is a TV classic.
A memorial was held today for Betty Ford. Mrs. Ford died Friday at the age of 93. I think my generation associates Mrs. Ford more with her rehab programs and facilities. She was an advocate for those who suffered with addictions and other mental disorders. Now days we are very at ease with woman sharing their stories of breast cancer. But back when Betty Ford was the First Lady, it wasn’t talked about in public. The disease was treated as something to keep hidden and deal with quietly. Betty Ford changed that. She not only openly shared her story after he mastectomy in 1974; she made a point of raising awareness of the disease and outlook for surviving. If you ever get the time to do some reading, her story is not boring by any means. She always seemed to carry herself as a true lady.
As I type the sound of thunder is rumbling in the distance. It sure would be nice if that brought cooling rain and not intense sauna conditions……
