We actually got a chance to catch another movie this weekend. Between the outside work in the heat and having family over for homemade lasagna, last night my husband and I were both tired and in no shape to move much. We discovered that the movie Limitless starring Bradley Cooper was available on PPV.
Bradley really made his mark on the screen in the movie The Hangover. Which is one of my favorite movies. It is a goof comedy that fits my sense of humor. There are so many great lines in that movie, my kids and I often channel the characters suddenly out of nowhere.
The beginning of the movie caught me a little off guard as Cooper is a naturally handsome guy, but this movie starts with him looking like he lives on the streets. His hair is long and dirty, scraggly beard, clothes that look like they were picked up in a dumpster and his apartment makes some college students’ rooms look immaculate.
He is trying to be a writer. He even has a book contract, but no one believes him. If I ran into him and he told me he had a book contract, I would have found it comical let alone unbelievable. He drinks a lot. He seems like he is just a walking zombie. He sits in front of his computer to write and nothing happens. For hours, nothing happens. His girlfriend, played by Abbie Cornish, even dumps him; though it is clear she loves and cares for him very much. But, he is a walking wreck.
Abbie Cornish played the first Lady in Waiting in the movie Queen Elizabeth I: The Golden Age. She was the beautiful blonde who betrayed the Queen with her affair with Sir Walter Raleigh. She also had the lead role in the movie, Bright Star. In Bright Star she was Fannie Brawn, the real life tragic love of the poet John Keats.
Cooper’s character, Eddie Morra, runs into the brother of an ex-girlfriend from college. Conversation gives you the idea that the old friend deals on the shady side of things. He tells Morra about a new drug that is not yet FDA approved. That statement is of course tongue in cheek. The pill enables your brain to no longer work at just 40% capacity but up to 100% capacity.
Morra is given 1 pill for kicks. On his way home he figures what the hell, I will take it. He reasons he really couldn’t be any worse off. At first I was worried this story line was going to become corny rather quickly, but it never did. They kept it just enough on the edge of fantasy to believable reality.
The pill definitely works. His whole thinking is not only the clearest it has ever been, it is the fastest. It is also an absorbent sponge. His brain is firing now in ways we can only imagine. He wants more. He finds his friend and so not to give anything away, lets just say he obtains a good stash of the pill called NZT.
He learns to play the piano is 3 days. He becomes fluent in languages within hours, but the real kicker is his ability to see and use the stock market. You get the picture. He is smart, sharp and finally cleaned up and looking good.
Of course all good things come with a price. Sometimes the price is more than we can handle. And just like real life, the fantasy drug has side affects. Eddie learns the hard way he must maintain the drug with steady doses. This story took us on several winding twists that held some good surprises. Robert De Niro plays another key character in the movie, Carl Van Loon. Carl is a business mogul who quickly wants control of “Boy Wonder”.
De Niro, was as always, just right for this part. The girlfriend comes back into the picture as well and she offers a surprising attitude to the “new” Eddie. This movie is narrated through out by Eddie Morra. It is done in a way that leads you to why he does some of the things he decides to do and it also lets you see how he is feeling through out this wild ride.
We both enjoyed this movie. It was fast paced and I would categorize it as a thriller. It is rated PG-13. And for once I agree with the rating. It touched on some adult things, but not enough to cross a line. But, of course the lines we set are individual and our own, so others might disagree.
This movie is another hit for us for the month of July. I don’t hesitate to recommend this movie to you.
I hope you have a good week, take care and stay safe,
KJ
