Redbox so far for June has some great movie releases. Yesterday True Grit was released in Redbox as well as on shelves for purchase. We talked about this remake when it hit the movie theaters several months back. I have read you should not go into this movie thinking you will see the Duke. This remake is said to be more in tune to the actual book, written by Charles Portis. It is also said that Jeff Bridges did an awesome job of his own interpretation of US Marshall Rooster Cogburn. I am looking forward to seeing this one myself. This PG-13 movie is also out on Blue-Ray and on Pay Per View.
Another action film recently out on Redbox and PPV is I Am Number 4, This has nine alien teenagers, each with special abilities, now living on earth after the destruction of their home planet. Now they are also in danger from a hostile species. The specific teenager, who is call Number 4, comes by that by that name due to the fact 3 of his kind have already been killed. Changing his identity, moving from town to town with his guardian Henri, played by Timothy Olyphant*, John is always the new kid with no ties to his past. In the small Ohio town he now calls home, John encounters unexpected, life-changing events-his first love (Agron), powerful new abilities and a connection to the others who share his incredible destiny. This is a Walt Disney film and is rated PG-13.
*Side note: Timothy Olyphant is the star of FX’s TV show, Justified. This is an awesome show with Olyphant playing a US Marshall in his hometown of Harlen County Kentucky. This show has some of the best characters I have encountered on TV in quite some time. The second season just ended. If you haven’t had a chance to see this one, I highly recommend it.
Another Super Hero available is The Green Hornet. Britt Reid, played by Seth Rogen, becomes the new publisher of Los Angeles’ “The Daily Sentinel” after the sudden death of his father. Britt’s party life is about to change when he and his driver and kung fu expert, Kato, played by Jay Chou, stop a robbery. With the help of Kato, Britt starts a new career of fighting crime as the masked superhero “The Green Hornet”. This movie is said to have some great comedy and is a fun ride. This movie is rated PG-13
Also along the comedy lines is The Dilemma starring Kevin James, know for his role as Doug on King of Queens and Vince Vaughn who is another one I consider very funny. Vince’s role in Four Christmases is always good for a laugh when needed. These two are best friends since college who are now partners in an auto design firm, the two pals are vying to land a dream project that would launch their company. Ronny’s girlfriend, Beth , and Nick’s wife, Geneva, are by their sides. But Ronny’s world is turned upside down when he inadvertently sees Geneva out with another man and makes it his mission to get answers. As the amateur investigation dissolves into mayhem, he learns that Nick has a few secrets of his own. Now, with the clock ticking and pressure mounting on the biggest presentation of their careers, Ronny must decide what will happen if he reveals the truth to his best friend. Winona Ryder plays Geneva, and Jennifer Connelly plays Beth. This movie is rated PG-13.
If you are in the mood for a movie that is your fix for fast cars, short skirts, explosions, lots of guns and some pretty bad one-liners then Drive Angry would probably satisfy.
Just the title alone gives you a bit of a clue to what you are getting. This is a Nicholas Cage movie and all that implies. This is not the first time we get to see Cage drive “angry”, he was in the hit Gone in 60 Seconds way back in 2000. In this latest fast car movie, John Milton is up against the clock: Jonah King, the leader of a Satanic cult, has murdered Milton’s daughter and kidnapped her baby. In three days, King and his followers will sacrifice the child at midnight. Milton picks up the trail in Oklahoma as well as rescuing a waitress named Piper (here comes you short skirt) from her brutal, two-timing fiancĂ©. There are odd things about Milton: his driver’s license is out of date, he has a very strange gun, and he’s being pursued by a man in a suit who carries FBI ID and calls himself the Accountant. Piper, who’s lived a life on the sidelines, has to piece things together on the fly as they close in on King. This movie is rated R.
This next one is a favorite setting of mine. In Black Death, you will find medieval England with knights, chainmaille, sword fights and evil dark forces. Set during the time of the first outbreak of bubonic plague in England, a young monk is tasked with learning the truth about reports of people being brought back to life, a mission that pulls him toward a village ruler who has made a dark pact with evil forces. This movie is rated R and has Sean Bean who is currently in the latest HBO series, The Game of Thrones. Bean looks like he walked right out of that time. He is rough around the edges in just the right degree. He is usually found playing roles where he is the villain and he does a great job.
You should be able to find all of these new releases at your nearest Redbox and they can also be found on stores shelves for purchase. Happy watching.
Take care and stay safe,
KJ
