UPDATED: Cummins to "pause" development of 15L natural gas engine, leaving void in marketplace

TORONTO, Ont. -- Cummins has confirmed to US trucking publication Commercial Carrier Journal that it will be putting development of its 15-litre natural gas engine on hold, leaving the market devoid of a 15-litre product after Westport announced last year it was discontinuing production of its own 15L GX engine.

In a conference call last fall, Westport said it was shifting strategies, and would focus on being a technology partner to OEMs rather than building its own loose natural gas engines. It took the final orders for its 15L GX engine in mid-November, meaning customers currently have no 15L natural gas engine available for order. The Cummins ISX15 G was scheduled to enter full production next year.

Canada’s heavy-duty natural gas pioneers, Groupe Robert, Vedder Transport and Bison Transport, expressed mixed reaction at the setback. Robert Penner, executive vice-president and chief operating officer for Bison Transport, said if a 15-litre remains unavailable for an extended time, the company will have to re-evaluate its natural gas trucking program.

“This essentially takes natural gas completely out of the heavy-haul application,” Penner told Trucknews.com. “Our initial strategy was to deploy LNG in applications where our fuel cost per mile was highest, which is our LCV division. Since that is no longer possible, we must re-evaluate to determine what, if any, go-forward plan exists for us.”

Bison has been running 15 LNG-fuelled Peterbilt trucks between Calgary and Edmonton pulling double 53-ft. trailers grossing 63,500 kgs. The company entered into a fuel supply agreement with Shell, which has already opened one LNG fuelling station in Calgary with plans for others in Edmonton and Red Deer, creating an LNG fuelling corridor linking Alberta’s two largest cities.

Fred Zweep, president of Vedder Transportation Group, said a 13-litre engine will fit many of Vedder’s current needs, and that he’s confident the company can extend the life of its 50 existing Westport GX 15L engines until a suitable replacement becomes available.

“Currently we measure the utility of our 50 15-litre HPDI GX engines in two fashions: hourly for the tractors assigned to hourly-measured work and kilometres for equipment operated over the highway,” Zweep said. “As we push over 175,000 hours on the hourly tractors and just over six million kilometres on the over-the-highway tractors, we remain very pleased with the performance of the tractors and look forward to an extended life on these natural gas engines above and beyond what we currently anticipate a diesel engine in the same weight classification to do. Once we run the life of the engines, we have the option to rebuild and keep the truck chassis rolling up and down the highways. Westport continues to support our HPDI GX engines and we are confident Westport will be there to assist us if and when we might run into unforeseen challenges.”

Vedder uses some of its LNG tractors to haul heavy loads of trash from the Lower Mainland of Vancouver to a landfill site in the B.C. Interior and others for regional agricultural work closer to home. For the latter application, a smaller displacement engine may well work, Zweep said.

“At the time our fleet adopted the natural gas 15L HPDI GX engine, the 13L was not available,” Zweep pointed out. “Had it been, 50% of our HPDI order would have been in the 13L category.”

He added: “At this time we don't foresee any impact on the fleet, nor are we planning to make any adjustments to our operating processes…Natural gas is here to stay, the technology is visionary, the technology is durable as our fleet is a testament to the fact it works and once you wrap your head around the reality that the price for natural gas is economically more viable than diesel it shouldn't be difficult for OEMs to recognize the time is right for them to partner with Westport to develop the next evolution of a natural gas engine.”

Groupe Robert, for its part, plans to try smaller displacement natural gas engines until a 15L becomes available.

Yves Maurais, technical director, asset management, purchase and conformity with Robert, told Trucknews.com “I guess we have no choice (but) to go to a smaller 13L or 12L engine if we want to keep improving our fleet and continue our conversion to LNG.”

He said he’s encouraged by some of the product that’s coming online over the next year or two.

“The Volvo 13L engine will be powerful enough for LCVs, but not the (Cummins ISX12 G) 12L which is limited to 400 hp,” Maurais said. “We are anxiously waiting the new Volvo design as we think this will be the next step for us. Meanwhile, we will keep running the GX 15L from Westport in our 125 trucks currently on the road. The new Volvo LNG trucks should be available in 2015, so we're not too far out. We may look at some 12L Cummins engines for short-haul and local LTL operations but nothing is in the works right now.”

A priority for Groupe Robert involves convincing the federal government to consider lifting some of the emissions requirements on LNG-fuelled trucks so that they no longer require SCR and DPF systems.

“We know that LNG trucks produce less GHGs that an equivalent diesel truck; is there really a need to carry all of those systems (DPF, EGR and SCR) when you are using LNG?” Maurais pointed out. “We know it's an uphill battle, but we will keep fighting to promote and facilitate the use of LNG in Canada.”

UPDATE: Here is the official statement from Cummins, courtesy Christy Nycz House, on-highway marketing communications director:

"As a result of market timing uncertainty, Cummins has paused the development of the Cummins ISX15 G natural gas engine. While we believe natural gas power will continue to grow in the North American truck market, the timing of the adoption of natural gas in long haul fleets preferring 15 liter engines is uncertain. We believe the adoption of natural gas in long haul fleets will be paced by a variety of factors beyond the engine and include fuel tank technology and public fueling infrastructure.

Cummins remains committed to the natural gas market.  Heavy-duty fleets desiring natural gas power currently have the option of the Cummins Westport ISX12 G, which is available in a wide range of heavy-duty truck OEMs.

We will re-evaluate the market demand and readiness for the ISX15 G later in 2014. "

Cummins ISX15 engine receives EPA certification through 2014

COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Cummins’ ISX15 engine has been certified by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), meeting both the EPA 2013 regulations and the new greenhouse gas and fuel-efficiency rules that will take effect in 2014. Cummins 2014 greenhouse gas certification is the first engine certificate issued by the EPA, the company said.

Cummins says efficiency improvements to its base engine include optimized combustion and reduced parasitic load through high-efficiency water, fuel and lube pump systems. Officials say the ISX15 will achieve up to 2% fuel economy improvement over today's product. The Cummins ISX15 for 2013 will use the same base engine with the XPI fuel system, VGT Turbocharger, Cummins aftertreatment system with diesel particulate filter and selective catalytic reduction technology, and fully integrated electronics.

"Cummins 2013 truck engines will deliver better fuel economy with no major hardware changes," said Jeff Jones, Cummins’ vice-president of sales and market communications. "This results in improved reliability due to stable architecture.

"The certification of the ISX15 demonstrates Cummins commitment to deliver products that exceed both environmental and customer requirements. We are confident that we'll receive certification for our other on-highway engines well before the end of the year.”

Cummins entire lineup of on-highway engines for truck, bus, RV and specialty-vehicle markets will enter production on Jan. 2. Company officials say they expect all engines to be certified a full year early to the 2014 greenhouse gas and fuel-efficiency rules.

White House Clears EPA Rule to Allow Navistar Engine Sales

The White House approved a regulation that could allow Navistar Inc. to resume selling heavy-duty diesel engines that violate 2010 emissions standards while paying a penalty.

Following the approval by the Office of Management and Budget, the Environmental Protection Agency must publish the rule in the Federal Register before it can take effect. EPA did not return a call asking when rule would be published.

The text of the rule is not public, and OMB did not provide any information about the rule on its regulatory docket except to note that it approved the rule Wednesday after making unspecified changes to it.

The rule would replace an “interim” rule that allowed Navistar to sell noncompliant engines starting in January while paying a $1,919 fine. After some Navistar competitors sued, a federal court overturned that rule in June, saying EPA skipped the proper procedures in issuing it.

Chevron introduces new fuel-saving synthetic engine oil

DALLAS, Texas -- Chevron has introduced a new Delo 400 LE synthetic 5W-30 engine oil it says can improve fuel mileage by up to 2% in Class 8 long-haul vehicles and 4.5% in medium-duty trucks.

The oil was formulated to maximize fuel economy while also meeting engine manufacturers’ performance requirements, Chevron announced at the Great American Trucking Show.

The fuel-saving potential is in comparison to SAE 15W-40 oil and has been validated through SAE J1321 fuel consumption testing, Chevron says.

The new oil compliments Chevron’s Delo 400 LE SAE 10W-30 oil to provide a line of oils that excel at improving fuel economy without sacrificing engine durability, the company claims. It insists its fuel-efficient engine oils have proven through lab and field durability tests to match 15W-40 oils in engine wear and drain intervals.

“We understand that many of our customers are focused on managing fuel costs. Lubricants can play an important role in improving fuel economy, allowing fleet owners to reduce operating costs and stay competitive,” said Jim Gambill, North America Commercial and Industrial brand manager, Chevron. “Chevron is committed to helping its customers decrease expenses by delivering products designed to reduce fuel consumption. Our new Delo 400 LE Synthetic SAE 5W-30 is part of Chevron’s vision to offer a line of lubricants that deliver fuel economy without sacrificing engine or component durability.”

In addition to improved fuel mileage, Chevron says its newest offering provides consistent cold engine staring, minimizes operating costs and extends emission control system life. Delo 400 LE Synthetic SAE 5W-30 will be available across North America in the fourth quarter of 2012, Chevron announced.

Navistar Gets Approval for China Engine Venture

Chinese government regulators have approved a joint engine-making venture between Navistar International Corp. and Chinese truck maker Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Co. Ltd., Navistar said.

Originally announced in September 2010, the venture “sets the stage for global export opportunities of JAC’s light-, medium- and heavy-duty commercial trucks,” Navistar said in a statement.

The venture will focus on meeting the emerging needs of the Chinese commercial truck market by providing JAC with access to Navistar’s Euro IV and Euro V compliant technology.

The two companies plan to formally submit a commercial truck joint-venture application to the Chinese government later this fall, Navistar said.

Eaton UltraShift Plus now available with Westport's 15L LNG engine

GALESBURG, Mich. -- Eaton has announced its UltraShift Plus automated transmission is now available in trucks spec’d with the Westport HD 15-litre liquefied natural gas (LNG) engine.

The transmission and engine combo can be spec’d on Kenworth T800 and Peterbilt 367, 386 and 387 model vehicles.

“Our newest generation of automated transmissions perfectly complement the Westport engines and are an ideal, environmentally friendly option for a variety of heavy-duty trucking applications because they engage early and do not waste energy,” said Shane Groner, manager, development and product planning North America for Eaton’s commercial vehicle transmissions.

The engines and transmissions are rated at more than 110,000 lbs GVW.

“The Eaton UltraShift Plus provides Westport customers with a wider range of transmission options in a solution that’s integrated for product and service,” said Clark Quintin, president, Westport HD. “The UltraShift has been engineered and qualified to meet our high standards, and to perform in the Westport HD 15L HPDI engine with excellent performance under the rigors of heavy-duty trucking fueled by liquid natural gas.”

Cummins' 2Q Income Dips; Heavy-Duty Engine Sales Improve

Cummins Inc. said Tuesday its second-quarter profit slipped from a year ago but its heavy-duty truck engine sales improved.

Net income dipped to $469 million, or $2.47 per share, from $505 million, or $2.60, a year ago. Revenue fell 4% to $4.45 billion.

Overall engine sales fell 2% to $2.8 billion, with segment earnings before interest and taxes flat at $376 million. Component segment sales were flat $1 billion.

Heavy-duty truck engine sales rose to $802 million, from $693 million a year ago.

Improved demand in North American heavy- and medium- and light-duty truck and construction markets was offset by lower sales to Chinese construction, Brazilian truck and North American oil and gas markets.

Cummins said it expects its full-year revenue to be $18 billion.

Detroit Diesel produces 100,000th DD engine

DETROIT, Mich. -- Detroit Diesel today celebrated production of the 100,000th engine produced as part of the DD platform the company launched in 2007.

The engine rolled of the assembly line at Detroit Diesel's Redford, Mich. manufacturing plant.

The DD platform, consisting of the DD13, DD15 and DD16, was launched in 2007 with the introduction of the DD15. The platform represents the largest investment ever made in product development by an engine manufacturer, the company claims. Daimler Trucks in Germany, Japan and the US collaborated on the project.

"Our DD Platform was an important step in our strategy of having a globally-coordinated engine development and production network," said Henning Oeltjenbruns, plant manager, Detroit Diesel Corporation. "This platform has resulted in enhanced technologies and operating efficiencies that will continue to benefit our customers."
